Active

The mailing list of daily community and political activism

This is a list for documenting acts of community building, politics, and conscience. The goal of this list is to encourage an active role in creating and supporting the community and society of your choice. Members are encouraged to post a short description of their acts to the list. We hope that our postings will inspire and encourage others.

We believe that apathy and a lack of involvement are among the greatest problems we face in creating a decent and just society. The founders of this list are politically progressive and oppose the war in Iraq, but anyone can join and all acts of social, political, and community conscience are welcome.

Please note that acts posted here are not limited to writing representatives or marching in protests — any act of conscience, be it large or small, to create or support the kind of society you want to live in is welcome.

What is Active?

The purpose of the Active list is to provide a means of sharing personal acts, things you care enough about to take time to do and share. We hope that we will be inspired by your actions, and you will be inspired by ours.

Please don't simply forward calls for action or information that is distributed on other lists or websites, such as MoveOn.org or the ACLU Action list. These are wonderful resources, but many (perhaps most) of the members of Active are already on these lists. We are on Active to hear about what you are doing, not the ACLU.

If your action is part of a larger campaign, provide a link or reference to the organization or campaign in your posting so that we know where to find out more information. In addition, the wiki is a good place to post more general information. If you find a compelling organization or campaign you should post it in the Relevant Links section below.

As I said in my previous list posting, I'm considering opening up the subscriber list and mail archive, and posting links here. Only Spike has responded — what do other people think? Rich

Ok, I posted the list archive. If you don't like it, let me know and I'll take it down. — Rich, 3 April 2003.
