DeVaul's Three Laws of Graduate School
- A graduate student will not pass up an offer of free food*, or through inaction allow free food to go uneaten.
- A graduate student will obey the orders of his or her advisor, except where this would conflict with the First Law.
- A graduate student will sleep until late afternoon whenever possible, except where this would conflict with the First or Second Laws.
* Note that the term "free food," as it is used here, refers to something that the graduate student would be willing to eat under ordinary, sufficiently hungry circumstances. Thus cold pizza, moldy bread, broccoli, or Cthulhu tentacle calamari might or might not count as "free food" depending on the preferences of the particular graduate student in question.
