One of the best places for adventure travel in the UK is the Lake District, which is also one of the country’s largest and most visited National Parks. Sixteen lakes of different sizes offer all the water sports imaginable, including kayaking, surfboarding and windsurfing. The largest lake, Windermere is also the site of the annual Great North Swim, a sort of mass swimming event. Wild swimming is also available is some of the less well known tarns, ponds and rivers. The Lakes is also one of the UK’s best destinations for mountaineering, and several facilities offer instruction and excursions. Climbing is popular at any time of the year; winter mountain climbing brings its own challenges and offers a unique experience. One appeal is that there are climbs suitable for everyone, from beginners to experts and some climbs are considered to be among the UK’s most difficult.
