Bimatoprost, a medication similar to prostaglandin, is used on patients who do not have enough eyelashes and other ocular conditions. The chemical promotes longer and thicker eyelashes, according to medical practitioners. It is sold as a liquid and applied to the upper part of the eyelids to achieve better eyelash growth.

Apart from its effectiveness in making eyelashes thicker and longer, the prostaglandin analog has the capability to reduce hypotension in the eyes. It is also prescribed to individuals with glaucoma. While studies done in 2018 say that the drug’s mechanism of action in terms of eyelash growth is yet to be determined, patients treated for glaucoma and ocular hypotension have experienced said side effect. The medication also has off label uses and this includes the treatment of eyebrow hypotrichosis, androgenetic alopecia, and alopecia areata.

Bimatoprost is an approved drug in the United States and often prescribed with beta-blockers.
