Empathy refers to the ability of people to share the feelings of another person or to understand their situation. It is defined by researchers as the ability to sense other people’s emotions as well as being able to imagine what another person may be thinking or feeling under different circumstances.
Empathy is regarded as a critical leadership skill that helps leaders understand their employees, their problems and concerns that they may have. Developing empathy skills, therefore, is an important part of becoming a good leader.
It can be achieved by experiencing the different ways that people live and their particular circumstances; people that have travelled or worked in diverse environments often find it easier to do this. Another way to achieve this is to regularly ask others for their perspectives on how they feel about various situations. Developing emotional intelligence, where you recognize different emotions, is another approach.
