Wood that has been reclaimed after being used in another structure, such as a barn or warehouse, has a rich history and character that cannot be recreated using modern techniques. It can give a unique look to the design of a house and often, because the wood was drawn from old-growth forests, the grain and depth of patina is completely unique.
Before reclaimed wood can be used however it must be refurbished to ensure that it contains no dirt, pests or other dangerous materials. This can be done in a number of ways including washing it, rubbing it with sand or using a sander. It’s important though that the process of cleaning does not destroy the elements of the wood that made it special, however.
Using a kiln to create refurbished wood is one of the best ways to ensure that all harmful pests and residues have been removed before you use it in your next building project.
