Premarital classes provide counselling to couples before they get married. They discuss issues such as what each expects from the marriage, whether they wish to have children (and are in agreement about their choice) and other issues a couple can expect to face during their marriage.

This is a form of therapy where counsellors ask prospective marriage partners to deeply discuss their feelings and expectations about marriage, especially about their beliefs and expectations of the role each partner in the marriage should play. Some couples may also want to examine how their past may affect their future together; in some cases a person may transfer past experiences and attempt to re-create dynamics from other relationships into the present. Another topic that is often addressed is how the couple plans to resolve any conflicts that come up in their married lives; this is something few couples think about when first getting married but may become a significant issue in the future.
