What Do Plecos Eat?

0

A Pleco (Plecostomus) is a type of fish that originates from the Amazon Jungle of South America that can attach itself to any rigid surface using specially adapted parts of their mouths. They are algae eaters and scavengers that are known for eating almost anything.

A healthy diet for the fish, however, should consist of the following Pleco food: live algae and sinking algae wafers. This can also be supplemented with raw vegetables, such as zucchini or cucumbers, one or twice a week. Vegetable pieces must be anchored near the bottom of the aquarium so that they do not float around.

Plecos should be fed once a day with the fish normally feeding during the night time hours. Some Plecos also require pieces of driftwood to be available as part of their diet to maintain their health. Owners should check whether their particular variety requires this addition to their diet.
