Email security refers to different techniques that are used to protect the contents of email accounts from unauthorized access. Such security measures are typically used to protect against malicious actors gaining access to the contents of emails or causing other damage. With the amount of sensitive information that is now carried through email it is imperative for businesses to ensure their email security.
Security measures include ensuring a strong password and other access control methods (such as two factor authentication), encrypting email messages so that their contents can only be read by the intended recipient, mail application firewalls and spam filtering software.
Email is often used to spread spam (unwanted messages) and phishing attacks in which deceptive message subjects and contents are used to trick a receiver into giving up sensitive personal or other information or to cause them to click a link which executes unwanted software on their computer.
