The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) includes assistance for participants to live independently. NDIS housing support includes the following:
• Helps to build people’s capacity to live independently and includes support for developing their living skills such as money management, social and communication skills and changing negative behaviours.
• Will help to provide modifications to participant’s homes, rental properties or social housing to take account of their disability needs.
• Provide support with personal care and help with tasks around the home such as cleaning and laundry.
While most participants are expected to access housing in the private market there is also support provided through social and community housing, homelessness and emergency accommodation, government rent assistance and the National Rental Affordability Scheme which is aimed at creating additional affordable rental properties. Participants will, however, continue to be responsible for other daily living costs (including utility bills and other housing costs).
