Driving a 4×4 off road is a great way to explore the outdoors and spend time with friends. It also comes with risks, so follow these safety tips to avoid accidents and injuries.
1. Prepare your vehicle
Check tyres (including the spare), fluids, brakes and lights before every trip. Make sure your four-wheel-drive system works properly, and secure all loose cargo so nothing can fly around the cabin on rough terrain.
2. Wear the right gear
Everyone should wear a seatbelt at all times. In open vehicles such as buggies, side-by-sides and ATVs, wear a properly fitted, securely strapped helmet. Avoid loose clothing that could catch on moving parts, and wear sturdy footwear.
3. Follow the rules of the trail
Obey local off-road laws and speed limits, stay on marked tracks, and respect other trail users and the environment. Never drive off-road after drinking.
4. Carry recovery equipment
Pack a recovery kit with a snatch strap, rated shackles, a shovel, traction boards and a tyre deflator and compressor. Bring a first-aid kit, water, and a way to call for help where there is no mobile coverage.
5. Don’t go alone
Travel with at least one other vehicle and tell someone your route and expected return time.
6. Get proper insurance
Make sure your vehicle is fully insured for off-road use. Anything can happen on the trail, and the right cover protects you from large unexpected costs.
