What Is Functional Medicine?

0

Functional medicine is an approach to healing patients that focuses on identifying the underlying causes of a disease rather than reacting to symptoms or differential diagnoses. This approach is based in biology and came from insights gleaned from the evolving research into the impact of nutrition, genomics and epigenetics on a person’s overall health.

This approach assists a clinician in prioritizing a patient’s health issues that are seen as resulting from an interaction of biological factors that are drawn from personal, family, social and medical history. This approach organizes what may at first appear to be separate issues into a holistic view of the patient’s health that is used to help the clinician elicit a comprehensive picture of the patient which is then used to inform the discussion of complex, chronic disease with the patient with the goal of finding their root-causes.
